Celebrating the Africanness of swing dancing

 

As part of the Euro-Africa Biennial in Montpellier from October 9 to 15, 2023, and in continuity with the action undertaken in 2021 on the occasion of the Africa France Summit (Off Program), the Swinging Montpellier festival is pleased to propose a project centered on the Africanity of Jazz dances. Three events will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023:

A time for discussion around a lecture by Marie N’Diaye, followed by a discussion with participants,

A time for dance in the form of an educational jam workshop,

A time for social dancing with a Block Party.

Dancer, choreographer and researcher in dance anthropology and ethnochoreology, Marie N’diaye focuses her practice and research on jazz dances: their complex, hybrid African roots and their contemporary expressions.

10 a.m. – Museum doors open – Participants welcome
10:30 am – start of conference (45 mins + 20 mins discussion with audience)

Rémy Kouakou Kouame (artistic director of Swinging Montpellier), Marie N’Diaye and the Museik 1st collective will introduce you to the music, dance and movement that form part of the continuum of jazz and African diasporic heritage.

Their DJ set will take you from Afro to House, via Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk and Amapiano. Dancers from all walks of life, or simply music lovers, get ready for an interactive performance that takes everyone on a unique musical journey and a frenzied desire to dance.
