Swinging Africa Montpellier,

celebrating african swing dances

As part of the Montpellier Euro-Africa Biennial from October 9 to 15, 2023, and in continuity with the action undertaken in 2021 on the occasion of the Africa France Summit (Off Program), the Swinging Montpellier festival is delighted to propose a project centered on the Africanity of Jazz dances. Three events will take place on Sunday, October 15, 2023:

A talk by Marie N’Diaye, followed by a discussion with participants,

A time of dance in the form of an educational jam workshop,

A time of social dancing with a Block Party.

Dancer, choreographer and researcher in dance anthropology and ethnochoreology, Marie N’diaye focuses her practice and research on jazz dances: their complex, hybrid African roots and their contemporary expressions.

10:30 am – Conference begins (45 mins + 20 mins discussion with audience)

Rémy Kouakou Kouame (artistic director of Swinging Montpellier), Marie N’Diaye and the Museik 1st collective will introduce you to the music, dance and movement that form part of the continuum of jazz and African diasporic heritage.

Museik 1st is a DJ collective featuring KouaDJo (Remy Kouakou Kouame), MLKM (Malkom) and BK (Belkacem). All 3 from Montpellier and with backgrounds in dance (Swing, House, Hip Hop & Salsa), they perfectly blend all types of dance with a touch of urban and clubbin music…
Their DJ set will take you from Afro to House, via Jazz, Hip Hop, Soul, Funk and Amapiano. Whether you’re a dancer from any walk of life, or simply a music lover, get ready for an interactive performance that will take you on a unique musical journey and inspire you to dance wildly.
